The strangest problem...

Sooooo need help...I could not power on my Mac so as a last resort, took off the back and unplugged the battery. Also pulled out the memory cards and reinstalled. This worked! However now my keyboard types strange characters so i can't log in!

Sorry to hear about your troubles with your MacBook Pro. Now that you got it sorted out your first issue, you now are facing a second issues with the key's not typing properly. Let's see what we can do to get it sorted out.
I would suggest starting your Mac up in Safe Mode to see if the keys start typing properly. If you can log in there, I would also recommend that you turn on the KeyBoard Viewer. This will show you your keyboard and what keys are being pressed at the moment. If you restart your computer and those weird characters show up, then you can see what keyboard keys are showing that they are being pressed. For more details, take a look at the articles below to get you started with troubleshooting this.
