Can I just use sharing to find phones and nothing else?

You don't need Family sharing to do that, you can find anybody's phone from the 'Find my Phone' app on your phone.

1. Open the 'Find my iPhone' app.
2. Tap sign out
3. Sign back in using the ID belonging to the person who owns the device you are trying to find.
