How to change my Gmail Password?

I'm running El Capitan and using Mail to get to my Gmail account via IMAP. I am looking for instructions on how I would go about changing my password for this configuration. I do not see a Password field in the Account Preferences in Mail. (see image), and the Incoming Mail Server section is grayed out. What is the proper way to reset the password so I can access my account in Mail?

Hi Alex,

Thanks for that. However, I was looking for instructions on the second half of the process, meaning after I change the password on Google's site, what do I need to do in Mail so it's configured with the new password? Any other recommendations about password configuration like Two-Factor authentication and app specific passwords would be insightful.

Thanks for the assistance.

Best Regards,

Two things to try. I had the same issue with Yahoo. So I'm assuming it's the same for Gmail.

Go to Accounts in Mail

in your Gmail account select: 'outgoing mail server' drop down menu

Select: edit SMTP

And, it will bring up a new window that should allow for the password field to be input.

Hope that helps.

Also, if it's Malware, which mine also had. Here's how to fix the issue.

Follow these instructions:

Go to: https://www.malwarebytes.org

Park your mouse over ’Downloads' in the upper left menu of the page, not the ‘Downloads' link in the middle of the page.

And, click ‘Products’ in the drop down menu.

Once new page the comes up, scroll down to the worm in the apple image and click ‘download’ - Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac Free

Then, click ‘Download Now’

Then, ‘Open’

Then, follow instructions to install by dragging it to applications - the window that pops up will instruct you.

Then, search your computer for ‘malwarebytes’ and open it.

It will install and ask you to accept, etc.

Click ‘Scan’ when Malware window pops up. It takes ten seconds.

If it finds issues it will bring up a new window and ask if you want to remove those items.

Do that if it finds them.

I am having the same problem. I changed my Gmail password using an Android device. My iPhone works. My iPad prompted me to enter the new password. The iMac, however, simply does not work any more for my Gmail account. This is an IMAP account. I have no way to change the password that I can find. The Mail app no longer has it. The same symptom exists on my Macbook Air.

I am using El Capitan on both.
