Good to hear your son is beyond the need for restrictions on his iPhone. It does sound like you found the answer to your question about the Restrictions passcode however.
From About Restrictions (parental controls) on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support
If you lose or forget your Restrictions passcode, you'll need to erase your device and then set it up as a new device to remove the Restrictions passcode. Restoring the device using a backup won't remove the passcode.
I would definitely exhaust all possible passcode combinations first.
If you need to erase, remember you can Download your past purchases - Apple Support
Best regards.
