Q: iPhone 6 Battery Drain

Over the last few days my battery has been draining incredibly faster than usual – about a percent every minute of use perhaps. The only settings that I can think I changed before this was to upgrade my iCloud account to 50GB capacity (I hadn’t backed my phone up for over 6 months because I had run out of iCloud space) and I changed the cookies to ‘always allow’ due to one website I had to use.

I have taken all the reasonable steps I can to save battery consumption such as turning off background app refresh and ensuring auto brightness is on and indeed not automatically turning up too high.

However, the problem seems to be Safari which is using 40% plus of my battery according to the battery usage in the settings. I have Safari linked with iCloud to sync with my iPad so not sure if it’s something to do with that in the background. Although when I turned that feature off for a bit there didn’t seem to be any improvement. This is also a feature I use regularly and therefore not a reasonable solution in any case. I also deleted all cookies and history and shut down the app as well as turning the phone off and on and re-booting it. Again, to no avail.

Although I installed iOS 9.2 some time before the battery started draining, I read that it might be something to do with a problem app, in my case Safari, not having fully downloaded and trying to correct itself in the background. So I have restored my phone and installed the latest backup from iTunes on my laptop but the problem still persists.

I've seen in older posts that this has been a problem for some people but its causes seem to be random and no one solution out there. Is this still a general problem related to a bug in the software and is there any way to actually solve it?

I also can't believe how hard it is to get useful support from Apple who I thought were renowned for their customer support! Automated machine every time you call, no email addresses, no store appointments for 7 days, lots of website link errors - generally had a right nightmare!

To be honest with you I did not experience such issue with the battery after iOS 9.2 update. You may check some battery saving tips here: Battery Saving Tips for Your Beloved iPhone

If nothing helps take you device to the nearest Apple Store for further diagnostics. Good luck.

    Thanks for the reply.

Forgot to mention that Apple has already run diagnostics remotely on it and battery is fine apparently.

Not convinced by the battery saving tips to be honest. Most of them are, 'don't use your phone to its full potential and don't use all the features that were designed to make the phone better' which I don't really see as an option around a fault. I was using all these features before and it was fine so shouldn't have to change now and it's not about conserving battery really - it is draining too rapidly when barely being used so small changes aren't really going to make a difference I think. Something bigger must be wrong.

Oddly, today battery usage shows Settings at 30% (37 minutes on screen - 23 minutes background so not sure what the **** that is), Mail 23% and Safari 18% for last 15 hours after restoring it. Have barely used Safari today and have been messing with settings again, trying to downgrade my iCloud back to normal 5GB (which it won't let me do as 5GB isn't enough for the phone), but makes me think something is just generally wrong with the phone.

My phone now seems to constantly have the 'activity circle' icon on in the top left hand corner next to the network signal so I think it must be something to do with that.

Just tried a hard reset which has got rid of it temporarily but I've heard from some threads it can just keep coming back - does anyone have a permanent solution?

Hello, sounds like its constantly searching for service, are you in a good coverage area?

    Some things to try.

1.Check for carrier update: Go to settings>general>about if there is a carrier update you will be prompted to install, if you are not prompted for an update there is none available.

    2. Reset your network settings: settings>general>reset>reset network settings: After doing this you will need to reconnect to wifi and pair any bluetooth devices again.

    3. Reseat your sim card: power off phone>remove sim card>power on iphone>put in sim card: Remove or switch the SIM card in your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
