This has only started happening since I updated to El Capitan.
Every morning when I come into work the server has disconnected from my iMac. As soon as I click one of the folders in my sidebar though it will connect to the server again.
Just wondering if this is something being addressed with the OS before I talk to our I.T. guy.

Check System Preferences - Energy Saver - check wake for network access. If that is not it reset the router and modem (yes even if other devices work okay) and then retest.
OK. Yeah that was unchecked. Does it matter if I have my computer set to never go to sleep?

I don't know but it worth trying. Don't forget to reset the router and modem. Not restart, RESET!!
I'm confused why it would be the internet though? That always works fine, it's the server where all our files are kept that drops.

Left the computer on over the weekend and it still lost server connection after having "wake for network access" checked. 😟
Did you reset the modem and router as instructed. Even if other devices are not affected, this is a smart thing to do. Also ensure both have up-to-date firmware, you will need to check with the manufacturer about how to do that.
Forgive my ignorance, but do the internet modem and router have anything to do with our server network? I suppose they run on the same line.
I'm not sure if I can get them to do this as we are an office with 100 or so computers and people using them.

However, depending on who your ISP is the modem and router may be two boxes or one box. For example, Comcast is my ISP and I have an integrated modem/router (one box). Your ISP may provide similar or different equipment.
I guess to me it's two separate things - the internet and then the server I connect to for files at work. I have no problems with the internet. The server is what is dropping for me only on El Capitan. No problems for co-workers on the same Mac but with Yosemite.
I have this problem too. Really annoying and I can't figure out why.
I think I will ditch El Capitan and go back to my old OS. Way too many problems with El Capitan.
