Can ITunes Mp4 format play on a non Apple Mp3 player?

After years of buying music from ITunes, I decided to get an Mp3 player. The Mp3 player I have plays Mp3 & WMA. The problem is it won't play the Itunes Mp4 format. So my question is, am I pretty much screwed if I don't by an Ipod I can't play my itunes music on this MP3 player because of the difference between Mp3 and Mp4? Any help is appreciated.

If the files are unprotected MP4 (AAC) format you can use iTunes to convert them. If they are from the iTunes Music Store you'll have to burn them to Audio CD first then import them back as MP3 as you can directly convert a DRM (Digital Rights Management) copy protected file:

Unfortunately, the answer is no. Purchases are in protected AAC format (.m4p), which is only compatible with an iPod. What you can do is burn your purchase to an audio CD, that audio CD can be used just like a CD you would by in the local store.
