Can you help us by describing any symptoms you are having? It is better to work from symptoms rather than trying to read something into an EC report without any background information.

That said, EC has red-flagged a RAM hog:

Top Processes by Memory: (What does this mean?)

2.45 GB com.apple.WebKit.WebContent(6)

Such WebKit flags can be due to a Safari extension or add-on that is not fully compatible. Go to Safari Preferences > Extensions tab and turn of all extensions, then see if things run better.

12GB is enough RAM for almost anything. I have 12 in my 2010 i7 iMac and never see any memory pressure, so I suspect you have a software issue, not a RAM issue.

The end of the ECC report also indicates an issue with FitBit/Galileo crashing. If y ouare not using that software, delete it. If yo ustill need it, I suggest contacting Fitbit support to see what they know about crashes.

Hello Ian,

I can't add too much to what Allan has already said. I can tell you that EtreCheck just prints any task in red if it is using over 2 GB of RAM. But you have plenty of RAM so that really isn't a problem. Your EtreCheck report ran in less than 4 minutes, which is good for a mechanical hard drive.

Installing an SSD into an iMac is a real challenge though. I'm sure it would be faster, but it is a very involved procedure and I would not recommend it. OWC (http://macsales.com) does sell SSD upgrade kits. I plan to perform just such an upgrade on my 2010 iMac after Christmas. But your machine has a Thunderbolt port. If you really, really wanted SSD speed, you could get an external SSD with a Thunderbolt connection - all the speed and none of the hassle.

Finally, 10.11.2 is out now. You should probably update.

Dec 17, 2015 1:40 PM in response to Allan Jones

The problem is that the machine seems to have slowed down over the past few weeks.

I also get a situation where a program will hang and display the spinning wheel, sometimes for so long that the only solution is to restart the machine.

Finally, my internet speed periodically really slows down, although I assume that this is a problem with my provider rather than the Mac.

Thanks in anticipation.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

There is a tendency on this site to try to suppress the expression of certain opinions, even though contrary opinions are expressed all the time. I don't agree with that policy, so I'm obliged to do what I can to oppose it. That's what is in the best interests of people who come here looking for help, in my view. I would rather not have to keep repeating myself, but if I must, I will. The right way to get help is not to post "etrecheck" stuff. The results of doing so are, again in my view, poor.

The right way to get help is to describe a problem. The description of the problem is the only essential information. Please don't prejudge what other information might be needed to analyze the problem, just because you saw something in another discussion. What you saw in that discussion may not be correct, and it may not be relevant.

This comment is not in violation of any policy that I have ever agreed to abide by, or will ever abide by. It's a legitimate expression of my opinion on a question that is directly raised by the original post, and has a direct effect on the outcome of that post.

Hello Linc,

Obviously, many people do not share your opinion.

I designed EtreCheck to provide a lot of important information about a user's system. Instead of going back and forth with the user over a number of hours or days, all of the information is right there. Sometimes the EtreCheck report shows the exact cause of the problem. Sometimes the EtreCheck report shows a potential problem that the user didn't know about, like a failing hard disk or lack of Time Machine backup. Sometimes the EtreCheck report provides some suggestions about where to investigate more closely to find the answer. And sometimes, the EtreCheck report shows no problem at all. Even this is helpful because it shows the issue probably isn't some common problem like a failing hard drive, adware infection, or scam-ware installation. In this case, maybe the solution is a hardware repair that only Apple can perform in person.

As far as I can tell, EtreCheck does exactly what I designed it to do. All evidence indicates that many people like using it and recommending it. It isn't absolutely necessary in every case, but no one ever claimed that it was. People just think it is an easy time-saver that makes a painful web-based tech support experience just a little bit less painful.

The right way to get help is to describe a problem.

Obviously everyone agrees with that. That was the first thing Allan asked for.

Previous versions of EtreCheck asked the user to provide such a description. However, in many cases, they didn't enter anything. But in most cases, people do enter a description of the problem without being prompted. Often, the EtreCheck report speaks for itself. It also speaks techie English for people who might not speak either language themselves.

It's a legitimate expression of my opinion on a question that is directly raised by the original post, and has a direct effect on the outcome of that post.

It may have an effect, but maybe not the one you intended. While this may come as a shock to you, most heavy contributors to Apple Support Communities already know your opinion about a wide variety of topics, including EtreCheck. You really don't need to keep repeating it. But should you chose to do so anyway, there is something important you should realize.

I'm sure you realize that you are providing free technical support to Apple. But did you ever think that you might also be providing free technical support to me too? You see, every time you trash-talk EtreCheck, that is a signal that you see something in an EtreCheck report that other people might have missed. I can search for that and chime in with additional information and maybe even give people some pointers about how to read the EtreCheck report. But more importantly, it shows me situations where I could do a better job with EtreCheck.

I wasn't just spouting off above about most people not sharing your opinion of EtreCheck. People really do seem to like it. But they don't give me as much feedback about ideas for improvement as I would like. I can write the software, but seeing the world from other people's perspective is more difficult. My first attempt at solving the "problem description problem" wasn't very successful. But as you correctly point out, it is a key component and would greatly improve the value of the accompanying EtreCheck report.

If you really wanted to stem the tide of the "EtreCheck fad", your best strategy would be to simply ignore it.

You may be dealing with a hardware failure, but there are a couple of things you could try.

A

Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC).

B

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
