Q: Bootcamp disappeared. How do I get it back?

I just upgraded to El Capitan. Now my Bootcamp is not available upon start-up. How do I get it back?

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

6.0.6133 is a Windows 10 driver package. Please download drivers appropriate for your Mac year/model from Install Windows 7 and earlier on your Mac using Boot Camp - Apple Support . These drivers support W7 and W8+ as noted in the specific download's System Requirements section.

OK, I have the correct drivers on a thumb drive Inserted into one of the USB slots. My wired keyboard and wireless mouse can't get to the folder icon at the bottom in Windows. No access to internet yet either. How do I install these correct drivers?

Also, when I power on, it goes directly into Windows instead of OSX. When I power on holding the option button, then I do have the option to go into OSX, but I never had to do that before.

it seems like the ElCapitan dev team completely ignored testing the Bootcamp issues.

Can you run the following two procedures

Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support
How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

and test if your Keyboard and Mouse work properly?

It should also correct your OSX and Windows switching. Please also see Boot Camp: Set the default operating system .

Now we've made significant progress: Win 8 is up; mouse and keyboard are back; internet is up; Chrome reinstalled; printer is functional

Now...is there any reason I need to install those Win 7/8 drivers from the USB?

Then... am I ready to upgrade to Win 8.1 and then Win 10?

Check if you have any unknown devices in Device Manager. You should be able to upgrade from W8 to W10. You may also want to create a Windows System Restore point before you start upgrading.

Windows Update should allow you to upgrade to W10, but be careful with any drivers that Windows Update offers. I would skip any such drivers.

OK, I'll skip drivers. Upgrading to Win 10 won't blow out El Capitan, will it? Can't blame me for being a bit gun shy.

Please back up OSX, Windows and create a Windows System Restore point. Be careful with Windows Automatic Updates. My recommendation is to disable Automatic updates, and manually prune what you want to apply. Driver updates should be unnecessary, unless you can validate it for any issues prior to such an update.

I've disabled Win auto updates. I use Time Machine for automatic backups, will that suffice for OSX? What should I use to backup Windows?

Also...separate but related topic: What is your opinion of using Parallels - would that make things easier or more complicated?

For Windows, I use a separate external disk, formatted as NTFS, for Windows backup/restore (or File History - depending on your Windows version).

Once you have BC/Windows 10 up and running, import the BC/Windows as a VM in Parallels, and you can have best of both worlds.

OK, cool. Everything is set up and running, backups are in place. I have not done Parallels yet. Last night I found out I need to encrypt the hard drive. I assume Bitlocker for Windows partition and FileVault for OSX Partition. Is there anything I need to be aware of in set-up so that the 2 encryption tools don't infringe on the opposite partition?

Is there a specific reason for encrypting the drives? It causes a lot more headaches and really does not buy you much. It is better to have your important files on an external disk and use something like TrueCrypt.
