My laptop is running on El Capitan....all software is up to date. Apple Mail periodically deletes messages from my inbox, with no prompting from me. I can't find any setting to change this. Last night (17 December) it deleted messages from early October. I only have 65 messages total so it's not like that is the problem. How can I stop these messages being deleted? My sent box etc remains untouched.

Is your account configured as IMAP?
Are there other devices (phone, tablet, etc.) accessing your email?
How do I tell how it is configured? I access my emails off my iPhone as well but only new ones (to look at them while I'm out and about in case they are urgent)......I only use my laptop for dealing with the older ones (that are the ones that seem to get deleted against my will).
I don't have an iPhone so I can't help you there.
On your Mac, open Mail, go to Preferences -> Accounts. You will see that it either says IMAP or POP.

You may want to contact the email provider's support group. Another person had messages disappear and the support team was able to restore them. Apparently in that case they were getting deleted on the server side.
