iPhone goes from dead to turning on and then dead and turning on again.

I had just gotten home and my phone had died one our prior. I plugged it in and used for about an hour or two until it eventually went back to 100%. I put down the phone, still plugged in, and went on my computer. After approximately 30 minutes, I went to check my phone again. However, I saw that it was dead. I went to turn it back on and when I saw the white apple in the middle of the screen appear, I though for sure it was just restarting. However, the phone went to black and then back to the battery with the red sliver signifying that it was dead. Then, the white apple appeared again and the exact same thing happened over and over all while the phone was connected to a power source and charging. I tried holding down the power and home button simultaneously and did so for about a minute which stopped the cycle. However, as soon as I let go, it started again and has been doing so for approximately an hour. What can I do to fix it, getting a new phone is out of the picture.

Hi njrmahoney,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities.

It looks like your iPhone 5 is restarting between the charging screen and Apple logo even when connected to power.

First, try this method from If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond or won't turn on to see if you can put the device into recovery mode and restore iOS:

If your device turns on but gets stuck during start up

You might see the Apple logo or a red or blue screen for a long time during start up. Try these steps:

  1. Connect your device to a computer and open iTunes. If you don't have a computer, you can borrow one, or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for help.
  2. While your device is connected, force it to restart. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. Don't release when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding until you see the Recovery mode screen.

  3. When you get the option to restore or update, choose Update. iTunes will try to reinstall iOS without erasing your data.

iTunes will download the software for your device. If it takes more than 15 minutes, your device will exit recovery mode and you'll need to repeat steps 2 and 3 again.

If this process doesn't solve it, contact Apple Support as recommended in If your iOS device restarts or displays the Apple logo unexpectedly:

Make sure that your device is up to date and your apps are up to date. If you still need help after updating, contact Apple Support.

Best Regards.
