We need to upgrade our iPhone 5. We didn't ever upgrade to iOS 8. We're wondering if we have to upgrade to iOS8 then iOS9 or if this is even possible.

You can just update to iOS 9. You can't update to iOS 8 unless it was downloaded to your device already. -AJ

What do the error messages say? Are you updating over the air or through iTunes and a computer? -AJ
