Migration Assistant with ethernet cable?

Hello! I'm have a new iMac and i want to use Migration Assistant to transfer my old files from my old Macbook Pro to my new iMac. My old Macbook Pro doesn't have Thunderbolt only Firewire 800, USB 2.0 and a Ethernet port. So i thought i will use the Ethernet port on both Mac with a CAT6 ethernet cable to connect directly for fast transfer, but i not sure how this works, because the drive isn't showing up when using Migration Assistant. I followed the instructions from Apple: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204350

But when looking for sources it doesn't find my Macbook Pro drive so it can start the Migration process. Do you need to set up something else so this will work? Or is it beter to this with Firewire 800 that is my other option. Hope someone can help me ;-) Thanks Krijn

I don't know why but it works now with the Ethernet cable my MacBook Pro showed up this time. 8 mins. remaining so looks that everything is going well. Thanks for your help much appreciated!

ethernet requires both computer to be booted normally

firewire requires the source computer be booted in target mode and the host computer booted normally

Thanks for replying, but with ethernet i booded the mac normally. I read that part for Firewire, but i would like to use the Ethernet cable for transfer.

FW800 it is an option and can be close or just as fast as the gig ethernet in this case because the bottleneck in this equation is the source hard drive latency and speed.
