Apple does have a solution. You must provide Apple with the original proof of purchase for the phone from an authorized source. If you can do that, they can remove the activation lock.

Contact Apple for help with Apple ID account security - Apple Support

If you can not provide the required documentation, there is no solution other than to ask the owner of the account used to lock the device to remove the lock. If they can not or will not do so, it is completely useless.

Activation lock is an anti-theft feature. Apple will not bypass it without proper documentation. If you can't provide the documentation required, it can't be done.

If you can't get the lock removed, file a claim against your "friend" in small claims court for the cost of replacing the phone. If you had set up your own account on the phone to begin with, your "friend" would not have been able to remove yours and set up their own.

Greetings menro255,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that someone else set up an iCloud account on your iPhone and you would like to sign out of that account and sign back in with your own account. To sign out of iCloud, you must have the password as described in the following article. There would not be a way to sign out without this password.

iCloud

  1. Tap Settings > iCloud on your iOS device. If you see the option to sign in, you can change your Apple ID now.
  2. Scroll down and tap Sign Out.
    User uploaded file
  3. Tap Sign Out again to confirm. After you sign out of iCloud, you might not be able to access some of your data that's stored in iCloud until you sign in again. If you're part of a family, you need to sign back in to use Family Sharing.
  4. Choose Keep on My iPhone or Delete from My iPhone when you're asked what you want to do with your iCloud data.
  5. Enter your password to sign out.
  6. Go to Settings > iCloud and enter your Apple ID and password.
  7. Tap Sign In.

If you updated your Apple ID email address and your device repeatedly asks for the password to your previous Apple ID, you can temporarily change your Apple ID to sign in.
