Camera compatibility question re FCE HD3 on G5

Greetings all!

As per the title, I'm using a G5 and have FCE HD 3 and I need to change up from the old reliable miniDV camcorder because of the perceived need to be able to upload in HD for youtube et al.

My worry is that as I have no experience of using a 'modern' camcorder I may end up wasting a lot of cash on something that won't work with my old gear. Is that a reasonable concern or is compatibility no issue anymore?

I have found the compatibility page here iMovie supported cameras - Apple Support

but that's for iMovie, and its not saying what generation of software/hardware is supported.

I can't think of anyone I know has such a camera to try the process out. Not a big social circle ...
