Want to delete archived emails, but they all come back

I have 16,000 in my Mac Mail client "Archive". If I delete them all, they go into my Trash. If I delete them there, they appear to go away, but then they are retrieved from Gmail.

I have done this already:

>>>

In Gmail go to the top right of the main page and where the gear is click on the arrow down and select "settings".

Now go to Forwarding and POP/IMAP label and look for the IMAP Access section:

- Under "When I mark a message in IMAP as deleted select the "Auto-Expunge Off - Wait for the client to update the server.

Now go to the option below called:

"When message is marked as deleted and expunged from the last visible IMAP folder" and choose "Immediately delete the message

<<<

And tried again to delete my archive, but they come back. And my trash message count gets bigger every time.

The solution (above) worked in the past for some users but did not work for me today.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10), iPhoto 9.6

An "expert" on the Google forum says this:

>>>

Unfortunately this may be part of a documented Apple bug. (Not a Google bug). Seems to have become much more prevalent with the latest Apple OS update, but has been around for a while.

Apple has been contacted by Google regarding this.

<<<

So why hasn't Apple had anything to say so we know that they are aware, are working on it, or ..... ????? Has anybody seen an Apple statement on mass email issues?
