Q: Home sharing has stopped working with everything, please help.

Today is December 18th, 2015. Home sharing had stopped working a few months ago. I called support and they went though a bunch of things and finally said, "Nope, it will never work." I insisted on talking with someone else higher up, they connected me. He did a bunch of things including booting in safe mode. We had logged out of everything turned off all home sharing on all devices. Turned off all routers. All Apple TVs, Etc  (Airport Extreme connecting to a Verizon Router. Tried Double and single NAT-Bridge mode) I think we cleared all cache folders. Reinstalled iTunes several times. AT some point Home Sharing starting working.

 

Now it has stopped again and I tried to repeat everything we did. I have looked at the Ports(using iNet) and did not notice anything running that used one particular port "5353" which is supposed to be for Home Sharing. I did see "3689" listed twice which is for "iTunes Music Sharing, AirPlay". Anyway 2 Apple TVs and 1 iPhone can't access Home Sharing. Home Sharing is turned on on all three devices and in iTunes on the Mac Book  Pro.  TO confirm all 4 devices are connected to the network I scanned the network observing all Devices and their IP addresses. Both Apple TVs are 3rd Gen the iPhone is a 6s, the Mac is a "MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012)" the router is an Airport Extreme Tower. All Devices have the latest Firmware, Software, Etc. Since I got an iTunes account before .mac,.me,iCloud came out I ended up with two Apple IDs.  Why they didn't automatically merge these, I have no idea. Anyway I am stuck with an iTunes Store, App Store account for Music, Movies, Apps, etc and an iCloud account for syncing, Calendar, contacts, ETC between the devices. Regardless only the same App store / iTunes store account Apple ID is used to log into the iTunes Store on all three devices. I am not using Family Sharing!!  I have had the Firewall turned off on the MacBook. I really am not expecting Home Sharing to ever work again. The case number about this on 9/26/15 was "947596222".  Anything that I haven't tried I'm willing to.

    Well the answer is: Turning on Home Sharing in Preferences does not work! It is now in the file Menu, this needs to be removed from Preferences.

    No one ever told me to do it any differently then I always had. So if you didn't know that you don't use Preferences to turn on Home Sharing any more. Go to your file menu in iTunes and turn it on there.
