Q: Photos uploading again to iCloud on new iMac

Hi, Ive just bought a new iMac and used Time Machine to transfer all my photos. Now all my photos are being uploaded to iCloud again. It took weeks the first time, and I'm not sure why it needs to upload them again. I know the photos are already there because i can see them on my IOS devices. Is there any way to stop the upload of photos that are already there without preventing new photos being uploaded? I have all the originals on my iMac.

The library one your new iMac is considered a new library that's connected to the iCloud Photo Library so it must go thru the uploading process again. It won't duplicate the photos online but will go thru the process.

If you ever have the need to repair your Photos library that too will trigger an upload. A real inconvenience. That's spelled out in Fix missing or incorrect thumbnails in Photos - Apple Support.

Don't know of any way around it. A real inconvenience. You can tell Apple about it via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html if you're so inclined.
