I bought a new mac mini this summer. Found I had to buy new stuff to support my new computer, like external hd to backup my new 1gig internal hd.

1) buy a wifi flash drive. see my prior post

2) You can find some computer somewhere to transfer your files on your current flash drive to the wifi flash drive.

Anyone know of an adapter to make a usb flash drive to look like a memory card? Could this be limited to photos and videos?

Install dropbox.com or box.com on your ipad.

Create dropbox.com or box.com etc. account.

Goto library, etc.

Upload files to your account. You may need to upload one file at a time. On a computer you can download and install apps, you will be able to create a dropbox/ box folder and copy all your files there.

Files will sync to your ipad.

I bet if you want to an apple store, they would help you out. Make an appoint with a "genius." At one time, you could install app on the macs at the apple store.

Here is the ios app:

The app get some bad reviews. Turns out there is a cheap imitation product that didn't develop their own software and parasites of of PhotoFast's software. Could be the folks using the imitation product are complaining.

iOS does not read pdf/other documents from a USB connection.

There are portable drives which create their own wifi networks - your iPad

should be able to connect to such portable drives.

How are the documents/pdfs getting onto the thumb drive you wish to

view? Could the originator not email them to you or send such items

to dropbox/iCloud drive for you to access from there?

The iPad doesn't have any sort of 'my computer' 'finder' or a file manager program on it, which is why it will not read flash drives. There's nothing there to allow it to do so. (The trade off is this is what makes it less vulnerable to viruses. most viruses use the finder/my computer to spread, since the iPad lacks that - and the fact that the iPad is a totally different operating system from Macs and PC's makes it very resistant to malware and viruses)

The aforementioned solutions are a possibility for you. Or something like the Kingston WiDrive, which makes a local wifi network you connect your iPad to to transfer files.

Apple's workflow is based around the cloud and internet access and the presumption that everyone can always get on the internet to transfer files and data. Good in some ways, not so realistic in others.

Perhaps your work has or could set up some sort of FTP site where the files can live that you can access and download them from.

You will also need an app to read the files. There are many out there (presuming you don't already have one). If your device is new you'll get Apple apps free, Pages and Numbers which may open them. Or Adobe has PDF reader apps. I used to use Documents to Go for my documents. It's just a matter of what works for you and your needs.
