How your iPhone will work with Apple Pay depends on the settings that you have chosen.
On your iPhone, go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode:
- Under "Use Touch ID for", check that the option for Apple Pay is enabled.
- Under "Allow Access When Locked" (scroll down the same screen), check that Wallet is enabled, otherwise you will need to unlock your iPhone before being able to use Apple Pay.
With these settings enabled, when you are about to buy something using Apple Pay in a store, you can either:
- Prepare your iPhone in advance:
- Double-press the Home button, select your preferred card (if you have added more than one) and place your finger on the Touch ID sensor until you see "Hold Near Reader to Pay".
- You then have 60 seconds to pay by holding the top of your iPhone near the contactless reader.
- During this time, you do not need to keep your finger on the Touch ID sensor or to place it there again - the payment will process when you present your iPhone to the reader.
- Wait until you are ready to pay, then hold the top of your iPhone near the contactless reader with your finger resting (not pressing) on the Touch ID sensor.
