How to make AppleTV show landscape FaceTime picture

I think this used to work in earlier versions of IOS and maybe even AppleTV, but it is most frustrating now.

When FaceTiming with my son and his wife in Japan from Canada I place my iPhone just beneath my TV and make the FaceTime connection to his iPhone.

Up until the connection is made the picture AirPlayed from my iPhone to my AppleTV is in landscape. However once connected or either end, here or in Japan, changes from Landscape to portrait. The picture becomes rotated 90 degrees.

Leaving my iPhone in portrait works as expected, but of course the picture is vertical and wastes the sides of the screen.

Is there a way to do this so both ends see a proper landscape picture?

Thanks for any advice
