Q: iCloud and iTunes backups gone from new phone

I just got a new iPhone 6s today, and switched cell providers and numbers as well. I went home to restore all my pictures, ect. onto my new phone, but when I went to do so it said I had no iCloud back ups, or iTunes backups. I know this is not true, because I backed up all my photos and eve right before I got my new phone. Any ideas on how to resolve the issue and get my pictures  and contacts back?

iPhone 6s, iOS 9.2

    Hi Neekeii,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that you purchased a new iPhone 6s and would like to restore from a backup to recover your data, but you are not seeing any backups.

The following article explains how to restore from an iCloud backup. The backups are associated with the Apple ID that was signed into iCloud on your old device; make sure you are signing into the same Apple ID.

It seems like you may have been backing up to iTunes as well, but don’t see those backups either. Use the following article to help you navigate in iTunes to see what backups may or may not be available.

Another option you may have because you mention wanting to recover Photos specifically, is iCloud Photo Library. If you were signed into iCloud on your older device and had iCloud Photo Library enabled, you should be able to sign in with the same account on your new iPhone and enable this feature to recover your photos.

What do I need to use iCloud Photo Library?

You need an Apple ID, a device with the most recent version of iOS or OS X, and enough storage in iCloud to save your photos.

How do I turn on iCloud Photo Library?

If you want to turn on iCloud Photo Library on all of your devices, follow these steps:

    • In iOS 8.3 or later, go to Settings > iCloud > Photos, then turn on iCloud Photo Library.
    • In OS X 10.10.3 or later, go to System Preferences > iCloud > Options next to Photos, then select iCloud Photo Library.

When do photos and videos upload to iCloud Photo Library?

When you turn on iCloud Photo Library on your iOS device or Mac, your photos and videos will upload after you connect to the Internet with Wi-Fi and your battery is charged. You can see the status and pause the upload for one day when you follow these steps:

    • On your iOS device, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos.
    • On your Mac, click Photos > Preferences > iCloud.

Depending on your Internet connection speed, the time it takes for your photos and videos to appear on the Photos app on iCloud and all of your devices might vary. Make sure you turn on iCloud Photo Library on each device.

The iCloud Photo app allows you to upload JPEG photos that are less than 16GB in size.
