Bluetooth connectivity on my recently acquired Macbook Pro could not be established. I have the latest version of Capitan OSX software installed on my Macbook. Can someone please help

I have recently purchased a Macbook Pro. I am unable to set up Bluetooth connectivity on this device. It has the latest version of OSX Capitan software.

The Apple support could not help other than asking me to update the software, which I did. I was planning to buy wireless keyboard and mouse/ trackpad. But with this problem, I am afraid they can not be connected. Can someone please suggest what I should do?

iPad 2, iOS 6, I have the latest version of iPad
