Dec 20, 2015 2:09 PM in response to csnolanby MrHoffman,I have not tried removing the card entirely.
The document describes how to physically remove the card.
I do not know if physically removing the card is sufficient to disable it, or if there are additional steps.
Try it. Worst thing that probably happens is a fault, if anything at all. Operating the server with the RAID controller physically removed probably won't damage the server. But if you can't afford to utterly break the server, get somebody in that deals with the hardware for you, or get some spare hardware. (I've not looked to see if the RAID controller is swapped for a non-RAID controller, for non-RAID disk access. Check that.)
I'd expect the disks might need to be reformatted to be useful without the RAID controller, so have backups of your data before embarking. Always have backups.

Dec 20, 2015 2:53 PM in response to csnolanby Antonio Rocco,Simply remove the card as per the instructions Mr Hoffman has posted. Don't worry you won't harm it in any way although you will have to reformat the drives if you want to use them in the XServe again or another machine.
BTW you can leave the card in with a failed battery as that won't hurt it either although it does limit its effectiveness.
