Reset MacBook Pro without losing programs

Hi there, I want to give my MacBook Pro to my daughter, but it will have to be reset first. I've backed the computer up to an external hard drive, done a time machine back up and now I would like to reset it, but I'm worried the it will lose things like Word and Excel.

I'm not very computer savvy, so can someone please explain to me what to do?

Thank you,

C

Are you planing on purchasing a new Macbook pro or another Mac? What operating system does The Macbook Pro have in it? If any of the apps came through the app store they can be re downloaded. If you got another Macbook Pro with the same operating system you can use time machine to import. It may be possible anyway by doing selective importing. There are others that can answer this more specifically.

Very few Apple-compatible applications install in just one directory. This is one reason applications do not install on external drives, unless the external drive is a fully-bootable system in-itself.

I have seen a few applications that live inside a single folder, but most embed themselves in across dozens of system directories. Selective re-copy is often a difficult task.
