HP Photosmart C3180 - Printer not responding from Time Capsule with ONE Mac

Anyone seen something like this?

With an old MacBook (white), the Photosmart C3180 seems to print just fine from the Time Capsule.

With a brand new 13" Retina MacBook Pro, it prints one or two pages at most before en error "filter failed" is generated and the cups error log reports the printer as not responding.

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11), 3.33 GHz 6-Core Xeon, 24 GB RAM

What OS are you running and did HP have proper drivers for it. That is the problem you upgrade a computer and OS but the Peripherals often then stop working.. and you then have to buy replacements for those as well.

If you are running El Capo.. there is a good chance the computer simply loses the printer.. try pinging the printer by IP from the computer.

Is printer plugged in by USB or Ethernet or is it running wireless?

Both the old MacBook and the new MacBook Pro are running El Cap 10.11.2, and the configuration for both is identical as far as I can tell, same printer driver revisions and everything.

The printer is plugged into the TC via USB.

Basically for whatever reason the new MBP "loses" the printer at some point, sometimes being able to print one page, sometimes none before the CUPS log states the printer is not responding and the print status is "Filter failed."

The older, slower MacBook doesn't seem to have this issue.

Printing system has been reset and the printer deleted and added back many, many times.

I get the feeling that USB printer sharing may be somewhat flaky here; there's no IP address to ping as the printer is a USB-only printer connected to the TC.

You can tell when this is going to happen because the print dialog says the page is 57% or so printed, but then gets stuck and the printer actually does… nothing.

This printer is on the El Cap supported list.

Be creative..

Did you upgrade install the El Capo??

If so please reset the NVRAM and SMC on the MBP.

Test it by ethernet.. does it work ok when you run a reliable network.. ie wired.. as opposed to a natively unreliable network. .ie wireless.

Did you set IPv6 to link local only in the computer??

How hard do you want to try and fix it??

If the system works ok on the old Mac and not on the new one.. clean install the OS.. upgrade installs lead to all kinds of issues.

This does not need 100% commitment. You can plug in a USB drive and clean install to that.
