How to remove a CD-R from an Apple iMac G3/700 SE (Summer 2001
The drive ejection system quit working. I want to upgrade it to a DVD-RW. How to get the old drive out?

Have you looked at this internal DVD±RW drive for the slot-loading iMacs? At $149, it far exceeds the market value of the entire computer, but is a plug-and-play replacement.
Have you looked at an external firewire 400 cd/rw drive. I hacked one together with an external firewire 400 hd with a parallel connecter pata for the hd. Got a sony external cd/rw drive. connect pata cable and all was well. reading was fine. Could have had a problem with writing. not sure any more.
I bought a DVD-R from Headgap Mac for 50 bucks.
I have one. Picked it up at goodwill for 50 cents. Works perfectly. I use it with my 2012 mini.
