Q: Now unable to print to PDF at 24x36 size

For years I have been able to output from my CAD program to PDF by using the "Print" / "Print to PDF" function and outputting to 36" wide x 24" high.

Now suddenly I get an error message saying

Invalid Paper Size

Change the Custom Paper Size to the correct value, or choose "Scale to fit paper size". How to choose "Scale to fit paper size".

1. Choose Paper Handling from the print option pop-up menu.

2. Select "Scale to fit paper size", and choose the size of the paper which you want to print on from the Destination Paper Size pop-up menu.

No matter what I try I cannot get back to the old functionality. Any ideas out there?

It sounds like the 24" x 36" page size definition has gone missing.

That's likely tied to the printer paper size definition you've selected, rather than some problem with the Save As pdf' option from within the print settings.

    Did you recently:

    add a new printer,

    reset the printing system,

update from an older release of OS X to OS X 10.10 Yosemite,

update your printer drivers either by downloading from the printer manufacturer, or with by installing after receiving notice of an App Store Update?

install a new CAD program update that might have removed your custom settings?

I make careful notes about user-defined printer presets, because I usually need to recreate them whenever I reset the printing system, reinstall a printer from scratch, update printer drivers, or do a major upgrade to a newer version of OS X.

As a test, I created a 24x36 page size preset for a printer only capable of Letter size paper, and was able to successfully use "Save As pdf" to save a 24" x36" pdf file, even though the printer would only be able to scale it down to Letter to actually print it.
