Mail crashes iOS 9.2

Mail is acting up on my iPad Air 2 since the iOS 9.2 update. I receive unread notifications constantly even if they are cleared from the Notification Center, and the app frequently crashes without loading messages. Rebooting the device works for a little while before the problem resurfaces. I've done some searching to fix the issue, but I haven't found much out there pertaining to this version of iOS. Any advice is appreciated - thank you.

Try to reset your device. This won't delete your data stored on this device.

  • Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button
  • Press and hold on the Home button
  • Keep holding both buttons until the display turns off and back on with Apple logo on it.

Alternatively, you may go to Settings - General - Reset - Reset All Settings

If this does not help, restore your device to factory settings. Note that this will erase the data from your device.

Take a look this Apple Support article: Use iTunes to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support.

Thank you Thunder for the suggestions. I performed a reset and hopefully that solves the issue. I haven't performed a clean iOS install, so it has only received updates since it arrived new in box a few years ago. Perhaps a factory reset would be a good idea regardless.

I'll mark this issue as solved if one of your suggested fixes works.

the above worked, I turned off all email accounts in Settings, turned Off the iPad. After turning the iPad back On, I turned On each email account individually checking that it worked. All happy again 🙂 Apple, you have to get your stuff together. There has been too many problems with crashes lately. Email is a great part of my work, I'm ready to switch if this keeps happening!!!!

I have had Mail continually crash on my IPad on two occasions. The most recent was this morning. I am on 9.3.1. I found on both occasions that the culprit was an outgoing item in my Outbox that would not send. The solution was to delete the item from the Outbox. Once done Mail was back to normal. It's difficult to delete the item because you have to open Mail, open Outbox, and delete the item all before Mail closes again.
