Numbers, Align tools are greyed out

Hi Can any one help with what I would expect to be a ridiculously easy question but I'm a relative newbie to the world of MAC

Use Numbers 3.6.1 on OS X El Capitan 10.11.2, I have merged 2 cells vertically, and now I would like the text to appear middle center but all the options are grey out. I have tried this on un-merged cells and the result is the same, I can only have Top Left. I am using the Basic Blank template. I have saved the document to see if that made a difference but no.

Any ideas ? Thanks in advance.

With a new document from the Blank template, I sometimes get the grey out, for vertical alignment:

But sometimes I don't get the grey out (here I selected the first three cells only, which all had the same vertical alignment):

Does seem like a bug that is apparent when the current vertical alignment of the selected cells is not uniform.

Not sure what Greg is looking for, but I have a similar problem.

I want to change the vertical alignment (top, middle, bottom of cell) for multiple cells at the same time.

If the cells currently have matching alignment, I can easily use the alignment dialogue.

But if the cells I am trying to modify having differing vertical alignments, then the alignment dialogue tools are greyed out.

That's some pretty silly functionality.

Is there a way to override this apparent 'protection' on the v-align controls?

SG,

That's how it works for me, too. When multiple vertical alignments are selected, it should lose the blue highlight for the current setting but the controls should remain active, which is what Ian's first screenshot shows. But for me the controls are greyed out.

I'd love to know why it works for Ian. Maybe his localization cures the bug.
