When you say "I can't find," do you mean they (the missing items) are no longer shown in your iTunes library, OR that they are shown there, but iTunes says it cannot locate the item's file?

If you subscribe to Apple Music or iTunes Match, make sure you are signed in (in iTunes) using your Apple ID.

So, you're saying you had more than those 5 albums before, but everything else no longer appears in your iTunes library at all.  If you can remember the name of one of the missing songs (or albums), open a Finder window, and use the search field with that name (or part of the name).  See if you can locate the song file for any one of the missing songs, in your Mac's storage.  If your Finder window does not show the path at the bottom, from Finder's menu bar, View -> Show Path Bar.  What is the path to that song file?

Ken, thank you.  I went to the TuringTest2 article and I quote:  "With iTunes 12.2 or later it may pay to turn off iCloud Music Library and Apple Music before attempting to restore an older copy of your database as shown below. These options can be found under Edit > Preferences > General (Windows) or iTunes > Preferences > General (Mac OS X)."

I went to iTunes preferences (with iTunes open) and found that I can't turn off the icloud Music Library. I don't use Apple Music.

I have a thumb drive with some of the music in a file.  I changed the library location to "/Users/kmk/Desktop/iTunes Music."  "iTunes Music" is the name of the thumb drive music file.  That didn't work.

So I reverted to my ancient file-moving technique.  I dragged the albums one-by-one to the iMusic application.  That worked.  Unfortunately I don't have all my CDs on the thub drive.  I think I have the CDs.

(I even stumbled onto previous iTunes libraries but they were all the same, identical to what appeared in iTunes.)

And I have explored iTunes and I have received wonderful assistance from the community.  I'm sure I will have more questions in the future.

    Thank you or your interest.

Changing the setting for iTunes Media folder location in iTunes preferences Advanced pane is only for new media you add GOING FORWARD.   That's where iTunes stores the files for songs you add.  So, be sure to change it back to the default location, on your Mac's drive.  Otherwise, iTunes is now storing its files on the thumb drive, and when you disconnect it, iTunes will say those song files are missing.

Often, when iTunes loses track of songs, for whatever reason, the song files are still on your Mac's drive, and they are fine.  If you search on the name (or partial name) of a missing song, you may be able to find it (along with other song files at the same location).  You can then add them back to your iTunes library, like you did with the songs from the thumb drive.
