Cannot sync iPhone 6s on iTunes 12.1.3.6 on Vista

Upgraded iTunes, got a new phone, but I cannot sync it. Worse, I am now having trouble with a sync of my iPhone 4 now as well (I wanted to back it up one more time just in case). I also cannot update iOS on the new phone (6s) in iTunes. The iOS update error is

I am currently trying the iOS update via WiFi onto the phone directly; maybe that will help...

The one for the sync (both phones) is

Am I lost until I can get a new computer with a newer version of Windows? I can sync it in a pinch on my dad's laptop, but I'm not sure I can access the stuff from my old phone just by logging in to iTunes... Thoughts?

Neither Vista or that version of iTunes can communicate with iOS 9.x or higher. You'll need Windows 7 or higher to get iTunes 12.3.x or higher. Ifs you have a bvcakup on your PC, you can possibly move it to your dad's PC.

Just to be clear, it may not all be just your iTunes version. The update error 1 is generally a hardware error, but you can recheck that after doing the update to your iTunes. See this ASC User provided tip document Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates and go to the Older Versions section. To get a version of iTunes that will work with Vista and iOS 9.x, you need to use iTunes v12.1.3 especially made for Vista and XP. You need to determine if your machine is 32 or 64 bit, and then pick the link for one of those versions dated September 16, 2015 and install it. If you have any additional iTunes issues, you should be able to find all of your answers in that document.

Aha! I figured it all out! I had to update the iOS on the phone first, update carrier settings (multiple times, not sure why...) both on the phone then via iTunes, then I was able to sync. Very silly, but it seems to be OK now. Thank you!
