If you enable the Bluetooth icon on your menubar you can quickly check the charge status for all your BT devices there without having to open preferences.

You can view the Bluetooth icon on menubar to quickly view the % of Mouse and Keyboard .
To Enable Bluetooth icon on Menu bar,
APPLE MENU --> SYSTEM PREFERENCES-->BLUETOOTH--> here check mark SHOW BLUETOOTH IN MENU BAR option....

Dec 24, 2015 6:19 AM in response to JoefromCHSSCby Lorenzo.it,★HelpfulHi
I can confirm that before the OS X upgrade to 10.11.2, the icon with the battery % was there on the left corner of the window like the mouse, for some reason, I think may be a bug, they have removed the % of battery charge left only for the keyboard, if you perform a down grade to the release 10.11.1 you will seen the icon back. I hope that someone in Apple is reading this blog and adjust the problem within the next upgrade.
Regards
