    Several clues:

    1. HDD and SATA in the message ... HDD on the SATA path
    2. Clicking noise, which for HDD is an early signal of impending death (there are only two types of drives ... those that have died and those that will)

I would start keeping good clones (CarbonCopyClone, bombich.com, $40) to external drives, or TimeMachine backups.  Backup all of the drive, not just your favorite parts.  Perform the backups according to a schedule without fail IMHO.

You may also want to start considering an SSD from macsales.com (their Mercury series comes highly recommended) or a new HDD ... at least start planning if the SSD cost is worth the speed advantage over HDD.  You can buy it later.

Just my paranoid approach to this situation.

If the HDD is clicking, replace it NOW!

    Ciao.

I'm going to start with an appointment at the genius bar since the computer is still under warranty (I forgot to tell you that) and Apple Care.  I went once and they removed "crumbs" - dirt/dust of some kind.   Fixed it, until I left the store.  But- It's a new  refurbished until bought from apple last spring.  If "they" won't replace or repair the drive - or my kid "broke it" - I will consider these options.  We have been doing a double back up kind of strategy - Time Machine to an Airport Extreme at home and Carbonite, too.  Plus most of the users work is on google docs.  This is very helpful so thanks for your responses.
