CD not importing properly in iTunes 12

I have iTunes 12.3.2.35 on Windows 10.

For the first time since upgrading to 12, I am trying to import a CD.

Upon inserting the disc and selecting import, iTunes goes through the motions, but VERY quickly - it appears to load an entire CD in about 10-15 seconds.

It creates correctly-named .M4A files, but each file is only 40kb-60kb in size, and unsurprisingly, won't play.

I I change the import settings to MP3, I get a similar result, although the MP3 files are only 3kb each!

If I try to replace the existing M4A files with MP3, it only replaces the first file and then deletes the rest! Then I get an error saying:-

The iTunes Library file cannot be saved, An unknown error occurred (13005).

Does anyone know what is going on? Why is a feature that has worked for the best part of a decade no longer working?!

Hi Ian,
Sorry to hear that you are having issues with importing a CD into iTunes. Let's see if we can get that fixed for you.
I would start with taking a look at the troubleshooting outlined below. It will have check for the latest firmware and software updates for the manufactures cd/dvd drive. You might even benefit from running a diagnostic for the drive in the help menu of iTunes to see if you have any issues there.

Windows users, also check the following:

  • If the audio CD doesn’t appear in the iTunes window or a window doesn’t appear when you insert a CD, quit iTunes, then open it again by double-clicking the app icon in the iTunes folder in the Program Files folder on your hard disk. Do not open iTunes using the shortcut on your desktop. If iTunes now recognizes the CD, delete the iTunes shortcut and create a new one.

  • Check your computer or drive manufacturer’s site for firmware updates and install any that are appropriate for your computer and CD or DVD drive.

  • Make sure you have the latest software updates for Windows or your CD or DVD drive. Check the Windows website and your computer or drive manufacturer’s site for updates. Also make sure you have the latest drivers for your video and sound cards.

  • To see if iTunes can find any problems with your CD drive, choose Help > Run CD Diagnostics and choose DVD/CD Diagnostics. For help with understanding the diagnostics results and other CD troubleshooting information, see Additional troubleshooting tips for burning issues.

Have a good day
