Q: used macbook bought for Christmas stuck after software update.

I bought a used macbook 1.1 (a1181)  It was restored to factory settings.  When I got home, the keyboard was not responding (the track pad did though) I updated the software.  It had 9 software updates, including a huge one to the os.  It downloaded all night..this morning it asked for a reboot, which I did.  Since then it has been stuck on the grey screen, with the apple logo and a spinning wheel.  The keyboard might still be unresponsive, I plugged in a usb external keyboard.  Tried to reboot in safe mode, tried to run diagnostic, and inserted the original disks...and still stuck...and now the disk is stuck inside as well.  I bought this mac for my daughter as a Chrsitmas gift..please help me save our Christmas..thanks in advance

When you tried Safe mode, were you able to get to the desktop or window

that was not grey, blue, and that had a menu bar or other access available?

There is a fair chance with an old first-edition MacBook 13-inch model, its

hard disk drive may have failed. Hard to say. I have one & it's OK, and it

had the hard drive, replaced before I got it. A 2006 early model.

To try to get the install DVD out, is an idea, since it should be the key. But

why it won't, may indicate other kinds of problems. The MacBook1.1 is the

first edition of the first Intel-based Apple portable that replaced older PPCs.

With a computer that does not normally work, the methods suggested leave

a lot to be desired; Combo/Superdrive a few ways such site, mentions:

Was the install disc that's stuck in the MB1.1 a grey-label DVD or a retail branded X

install DVD for Leopard 10.5? The computer shipped with Tiger version grey label.

Sorry to say, you may have a project that could occupy your time into the new year.
