Q: Question about Folders in "Photos"

  Hello

I am using an Imac for my workstation and an Air for my Laptop.  (Photos Version 1.2 running on El Capitan most recent)

1. Thanks in advance for helping understand Smart Folders.  Using Get Info I am starting the process of identifying Keyword and Photo names in groups to pull out a specific set of photos for viewing from the master library.

2. I migrated from Iphoto to Photo a long time ago. Whenever, the transition was first made available by Apple.  Did not understand it and just went with it. I have 2 Folders on my list called iPhoto Events. One Folder has 20 albums when the IPhoto Events is expanded. The other has 30 albums.   I have another 15 albums that are stand alone.

Iphoto Events Folder with 20 Albums

Iphoto Events Folder with 30 Albums

15 Folders  (folders are not indented)

I realized that Iphoto Events is just a Folder and that I can rename it to anything that I want.

Q1. Can I move the 15 folders inside either of the Iphoto Events Folders to eliminate this grouping of folders that are stand alone?

Q2. Can I create more Folders where I can drag Albums into the 3rd or 4th Folders so that the Folders have a manageable list of Albums inside of it?

Q3. Can I create a folder that is dedicated to Smart Folders that are based on specific criteria which will show pictures from underlying library, based on the criteria defined?

Q4. I just noticed that I have Albums in each of the iPhoto Events Folders that are the same names and have the same pictures inside of them. If I remove/delete one of these Albums, the pictures in the underlying library continue to stay in the library, correct?

Q5. There are times when I cannot work on my workstation, but have time when I can work on my laptop. When I make changes to Folder names, Album Names, (change names, add folders, rename folders, create new folders etc.) Will the changes I make on my workstation, show up on my laptop?

Is there an amount of time that I need to wait for the laptop to update itself?  Inversely speaking. When I make updates to my Laptop. When I go back to my workstation, will those changes / updates be reflected on the iMac Workstation?

Thanks for your feedback

To work with your folders it is best to reveal the sidebar by pressing the key combination ⌥⌘S  .

In the sidebar you can drag folders into other folders.

    1. You can drag any folder into any other folder.
    2. You can create new folders inside any other folder and move the single albums there.
    3. A folder can hold both - smart albums and standard albums.  You can dedicate a folder to your smart albums.
    4. If you delete an album, the photos inside will stay in the library and in any ather album that has the same photos.
    5. Any changes to your albums or smart albums will sync to icloud Photos Library, if you are using it and to any Mac that is also syncing with iCloud Photo Library.  But only the standard albums will be visible on your mobile devices, not the smart albums.

It will depend on the size of your library and the amount of changes you are making.  I am using iCloud Photo Library with three laptops and one iMac, and all are in sync. But it may take a few minutes for a change to appear on the other Macs.

And for future communications remember that there are no smart folders - only smart albums

And folders can not contain photos - folders only can contain other folders or albums - albums only contain photos

and as to the update via iCloud Photo Library the initial upload is very slow - it took me ten days to upload 7000+ photos and videos and no downloads (updates) take place until the upload is complete - once everything is uploaded and stable I have found the updates to be quick - even with a couple of thousand new photos from a vacation it was very fast ( I did upload them to iCLoud daily from my MBA while on vacation but upon return home it only took a few minutes to download them to my iMac
