Q: ios 9.2 bluetooth pairing

Is anyone else seeing issues with Bluetooth pairing once upgraded to iOS 9.2 from iOS 9.1? As soon as I did this my Garmin Forerunner 630 was no longer able to communicate with my iPhone 6 (note: it was working perfectly whilst running iOS 9.1 before the overnight scheduled iOS upgrade).

Steps taken in an effort to resolve the problem

  1. Forgetting the device and re-pairing. This made the situation worse - the iPhone couldn't even "see" the device in order to attempt pairing.
  2. Pairing my Garmin 630 with a friend's phone (Android based) - it works immediately - it can see the Garmin and can pair, no issues.
  3. Pairing my Garmin 630 with my iPad Air - the iPad is also running iOS 9.2 and it too can't even "see" the device.
  4. Pairing my iPhone 6 and iPad Air with a bluetooth speaker (UE Boom) - this works.
  5. Full factory reset of my iPhone 6. Pairing with the Garmin 630 still doesn't work.
  6. Full factory reset of my Garmin 630. No change.
  7. Following Apple advice here: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: Potential sources of wireless interference - Apple Support

Conclusion

In summary, it seems that Bluetooth is still working on the Garmin 630 and the iPhone and iPad, however Apple has made some kind of change in iOS 9.2 that prevents pairing with certain types of Bluetooth device.

Similar reported problems

I've seen a few similar reports on the support forums for other devices (not "seen" / "detectable") after the upgrade to iOS 9.2:

Does not Connect via Bluetooth , iOS 9.2 to my sonny home cinema,

Since iOS 9.2 my Bluetooth PlayStation keyboard doesn't work any longer

iPhone 5S bluetooth not working after iOS 9.2

as well as more general Bluetooth issues for devices that are already paired:

no bluetooth after 9.2

iPhone 5S bluetooth not working after iOS 9.2

iCade/bluetooth controller + iOS 9.2

None of the posts I reference above provide any real solution.

Questions

1. Can Apple please recognise that there's a problem with iOS 9.2 regarding Bluetooth?

2. Is anyone else seeing similar problems to what I've reported and the posts I've referenced?

Problem solved, a bit of a schoolboy error.

For some reason upgrading iOS to 9.2 meant that the phone and Garmin 630 were no longer able to communicate. Attempting to pair them again via the iOS Bluetooth settings screen didn't work (the device didn't show up).

It seems that the pairing only works if initiated from within the Garmin Connect app running on the iPhone / iPad. Once you've paired via the app, the Garmin 630 will then be displayed within the standard iOS Bluetooth settings screen, showing as connected.

    In summary:

    1) Not all Bluetooth devices will necessarily show as available for pairing in the iOS Bluetooth settings screen (didn't realise this until now), and

    2) Previously paired device no longer working after iOS upgrade. Not a massive problem, but slightly inconvenient.

I have the same problem - but the solution doesn't help. If I try to initiate the connection via the Garmin Connect app, it tells me to go to the IOS Bluetooth settings, find my device in the list and select it to pair. But since my Edge 1000 never shows in the list of discovered devices I still can't pair it through the Connect app!

I am having the same problem. I recently bought a new car and my iPhone 6s with iOS 9.2 won't communicate for some reason. It pairs the phone but it won't transfer my contacts over. My husband has iOS 9.1 and the phone pairs perfectly and transfers the contacts. This is soon frustrating. Please apple you need to fix this ASAP. How could one upgrade change everything. Ie tried unpairing and repairing over and over again but obviously its the 9.2. can someone shed some light. I want to downgrade back to 9.1 but I don't know how.

You are not addressing Apple here. This is a user to user support forum. You do not identify what car you are using. Also, you state the device pairs, but just does not initiate the contact transfer. There are two things to check. First, go into Settings>Bluetooth, and then click on the small   to the right of your vehicle listing. From there, you should see information about Contacts and Groups. Make sure that Sync Contacts is checked, and then also check the listing there and that they have   by them.

Then, go to the phone settings in the vehicle and make sure there are settings there for downloading contacts. You may also check to see if the vehicle has any restrictions as to how many contacts you can sync with the vehicle phone book. Generally, the syncing of your iPhone contacts to the vehicle is initiated by the vehicle system.

I have the same problem--my IPad 2 does not recognize the Garmin via Bluetooth --it just spins and spins looking for other devices.  It does recognize my logitech keyboard via Bluetooth.  I also did a hard reset and re-added the keyboard--which the IPad found, but it still ignores the Garmin Forerunner 25 watch.  When I try to connect using the Garmin app to pair the setting, I have the same problem you mentioned--the Garmin does not find any Bluetooth. NOt sure where the problem is.

I'm new to support group so I trust someone will let me know if I don't connect correctly!  Anyhew, I just bought a Garmin Forerunner 25 and similarily to LongGreenline my device isn't found by my phone.  I believe I have the most current iOS and a supported Bluetooth version 4.0.   I will try calling Garmin and will report back if they have any help.

If the device is not found by the phone, it is more than likely not in discovery/pairing mode. Find the instructions for the Garmin, and make sure the device is in discovery/pairing mode. Go to Settings>Bluetooth on the iPhone, make sure Bluetooth is turned on, and you should see the device. Follow any additional instructions for the Garmin, and any on-screen instructions to complete the pairing.

    Hi Chris,

Thanks for the advice but I've done this repeatedly and no bueno!  I called Garmin and they want me to download the updates to the Garmin which I don't think have anything to do with this issue after reading the burbs.  Anyhow I'm willing to go along but my imac can't download them because it doesn't have the most current OS (I have 10.6.8) so I have to ferret thru things.  My friend has a newer ipad so maybe I can route it thru him.

So are you able to pair to any Bluetooth device at all? If you are able to pair to any other Bluetooth device, then your Bluetooth is working and it would be in relation to the particular device that you are attempting to pair to. Does Garmin provide any additional information in their instructions for the device as to what devices or iOS it supports?

After taking a couple of minutes to search the Garmin site, I found their manual. http://static.garmin.com/pumac/Forerunner_25_OM_EN.pdf

When looking at the manual, it appears that you do the paring through the Garmin Connect Mobile App, not using the Bluetooth section of Settings for the iPhone. Looking at page 2 of the manual explains the pairing procedures. You should be following on-screen instructions from the Garmin.

As far as downloading the updates for the Garmin, I don't know that using your friend's iPad is going to correct that, as it would not allow you to save any driver updates, since it would require a computer and probably a wired connection to do that, and the iPad does not support that.

It worked for me as well.  My Forerunner 630 had been successfully paired before but was not showing up on the list of Bluetooth devices on my Iphone 6 running IOS 9.3.  Powering off and then powering back on re-established the Bluetooth connection.
