connect airport express to netgear extender ex6100

I'm at my parents' house for the holidays. They have an older imac, but I bought them an airport express so all visitors can connect to the web without wires. Now I need to extend the range of the airport express so I bought the netgear extender.

Can someone tell me how to set up and connect the extender? The netgear instructions are not making sense because the airport doesn't have a WPS button.

Can I use the airport utility? When I open the airport utility, the extender does not show up. The airport shows up, but the extender does not. Can I use manual set up? If so, how?

Thanks!

Apple has designed their "extend a wireless network" feature to be proprietary.......so it will only work with other Apple routers......not the competition. So, it is extremely unlikely that a Netgear product......or any other 3rd party product for that matter.....would be able to extend the wireless network provided by an Apple router.

AirPort Utility can only be used to configure Apple routers......products and product settings from other manufacturers will not display in the application.

We can try a few things.....but keep in mind the strong possibility that it will take another Apple AirPort Express to do what you want.

What version of AirPort Utility are you using? Not sure? Open AirPort Utility, click the AirPort Utility menu in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About AirPort Utility and post back with that info.

What model of Express? Does it have 2 Ethernet ports or 1 Ethernet port? If it has 1 Ethernet port, grab the reading glasses and a good light and look for the model number on the side of the Express. Hard to see with gray lettering on a white background....the model number starts with an "A" followed by 4 numbers. Post back with that info.

You setup the Netgear via a browser.. there is absolutely no need to use WPS although Apple do provide it in the airport utility.

I have to agree with Bob though.. if you are struggling here.. the Netgear is the wrong product. Can you quickly return it and buy another express??

If not and just before Christmas that may not be possible.. you should be able to get the netgear to work.

Follow this exactly..

Where you might run into trouble are poor apple names.

If that is the case simply go back to the setup of the Express in your airport utility and give the express a short name for its wireless, no spaces and pure alphanumerics. Make sure the password is the same... but can be 8-20 characters.. only alphanumeric mixed case and numbers.

Use WPA2 personal.. but if that fails take it back to WPA1 and WPA2 which is somewhat less secure but still ok and is more compatible.
