Sorry to hear that you are having issues with connecting to the internet on your older Macbook. Let see if we can get that working for you.
I would recommend using Wireless Diagnostics first. It will help you isolate that issue with the IP address and tell you how to fix it. Check out the first article below to walk you through how to do that.

If that does not resolve the issue, the next thing I would try is trying a different Network Location. If the settings are not working correctly, creating a new location will give you the option to create a new Wi-Fi selection to see if it connects properly.
