Q: poor battery condition even with low cycle count

I have an early 2011 macbook pro, for which the max battery cycle count is listed as 1000 by apple at Determining battery cycle count for Mac notebooks - Apple Support. But just after 696 cycles, my mac reports its condition as "service battery". What should i do? Is this expected? If not, will Apple cover the cost to replace the battery?

I doubt Apple will cover it since the standard warranty is one year and the extended warranty period is three years. It seems a 2011 is older than three years. Besides cycles, the battery degrades with time.
