Apple Pencil 0% battery and won't charge

I'm using iPad pro with Apple Pencil for drawing daily, and I noticed my Apple Pencil stopped working today.

I plugged the pencil into the charger and on iPad widget it shows that there is 0% battery left and the charge lightening bolt shows up. Charge for 30 minutes the battery is still at 0%. Unplugging the pencil from the charger the pencil immediately disappears from the widget. The same happens if I plug the pencil into the iPad port.

I've tried hard rebooting my iPad, re-pairing the pencil, but still the pencil only shows up in the widgets displaying 0% battery and the charge lightening icon, and unplugging the pencil from the charger / iPad disconnects the pencil from the iPad immediately, no matter the duration of the charge.

Has anyone had the same experience before?

My new Apple Pencil gives me a "This accessory or cable is not certified ... " message.

Now I'm between 0% not charging, or plugging it in and receiving a "This accessory or cable is not certified" message. Every time I retry one of the two behavior s will happen.

Chat with the CS advised me to bring it to the genius bar to check.

I just had a similar issue today where my Apple Pencil wouldn't connect to my iPad Pro no matter what i tried. I tried rebooting, unpairing, charging for ten minutes via iPad Pro port. Apple Support said the battery was likely dead and i would need to buy a replacement since warranty was expired. However, I tried charging from USB cable for ten minutes, and the Pencil came back alive and well. Then I found your post.

Apparently this "bug" still exists as of iOS 10.2.1.

SSame problem and steps taken. Got a replacement and same behavior I'm now thinking it's something in iOS 10 doing it. My iPad itself charges fine and the pencil does with the lightning cable and adapter but just doesn't seem to charge through the iPad itself but strangely when it says it's dead it still works but doesn't show connected in settings

Faulty Apple Pencils aside, there seems to be a problem with iOS 9.2 recognising Apple Pencils devoid of battery charge (i.e. the "This cable or accessory is not certified.. " error). When this error occurs your Apple Pencil will not be charged via your iPad Pro's lightning port (for safety reasons).

A possible solution is to charge your Apple Pencil by plugging it into your iPad Pro's mains charger, using your iPad Pro's USB charge cable and the male-to-female adaptor supplied with your Apple Pencil ( see Use Apple Pencil with iPad Pro - Apple Support )

Leave your Apple Pencil to charge for 10 minutes or so, which should give it enough charge to talk to your iPad Pro. On your iPad Pro open settings > bluetooth and tap Apple Pencil. Tap "forget this device". Make sure bluetooth is enabled, then plug your Apple Pencil into you iPad Pro's lightning port and pair it again.

Hopefully your Apple Pencil will now be recognised, and will be chargable via your iPad Pro's lightnng port.

IF NOT, you should contact Apple Support ( https://getsupport.apple.com/ ).
