how to set up a 12TB RAID drive

Hello.

I have just purchased a new Mac Pro with a Pegasus 6 X 2 TB hard drive.

I have been reading that these can be set up several ways.

What I am wanting to do is use this drive for Final Cut Pro files.

Can someone tell me the best way to set this up.

My Mac Pro is as follows:

Memory: 64 Gig

CPU: Intel i7 12 core

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am not familiar with the RAID.

Thanks.

iMac (24-inch Early 2008), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

The user manual suggests that if the promise Pegasus was shipped with drives installed, it is ready to use. If you want to set it up a different way, they suggest you download and install the Promise Utility.

I believe you can set it up easily to use redundant (mirrored) or concatenated (just a bunch of Drives). If you choose Striped RAID, you will need to make frequent Backups, as any error breaks a Striped RAID with essentially NO ability to recover the files.

Thank you very much for your reply Grant.

I was looking for that info before I had to go to work this morning.

I had no user manual packed with the drive.

Somewhere else in this forum I had read that Apple did not recommend putting FCPX on a RAID Drive so when I ordered I asked them and tech support said to make sure that it was formatted to Mac OS Extended Journal.

The drives are installed but this is what the package says:

It is preconfigured from the factory with RAID 5.

Pegasus2 ships from the factory pre-configured with one logical drive. This configuration is suitable for general purposes.

I was reading about RAID 0 1 5 10 50 and was not sure if the factory setup would be optimal for FPCX files.

Thanks a bunch.

I have the Pegasus R6 attached via its Thunderbolt 2 port to my Late 2013 Mac Pro. FCP X, like all of my software is installed on the Mac pro's SSD. I use the Pegasus R6 for video storage, including a lot of 4K video. It is best to leave the Pegasus R6 as a Raid 5 system (the way it comes pre-configured) since that is the best compromise between speed and safety. A Raid 5 gives plenty of speed even for multiple streams of 4K video, while at the same time if a single drive in the Raid 5 array fails, it can be replaced and the Pegasus will rebuild the raid and you will suffer no data loss.
