Imac G5 A1076 new hard drive OSX install problems

I have an Imac G5 A1076 model that needed a new hard drive

Got the hard drive now I cant install the OS!

I formatted the hard drive using transmac on my Win 7 pc (since I dont have access to another mac)

I also bought the OSX 10.3 3 cd disc install discs.

When I put disc 1 in and hold C down and start the IMAC i get a grey screen with a dark grey circle with a line thru it.

I was reading maybe this is caused by not installing the correct OSX? I looked on everymac.com and found It was originally shipped with OSX 10.3.5

do I need to get a disc of 10.3.5? will it say 10.3.5 on the disc? my 10.3 that I just bought brand new in box never opened just says 10.3.

Please Help!!!!!!

You need the computer's original disks or a retail Mac OS X 10.4 through 10.5.6 DVD.

SO 10.4 retail will work????? But not my 10.3????

Before I go and buy more software can any please verify this?

NIel thank u for your help I just want to make sure, since I just bought this 10.3

on bad advice from someone else and don't want to be wasting money buying every version of OSX

with the same results

Be sure your 10.4 installer disc that is retail is 10.4.6. Earlier versions may not work on the newest iMac G5s. The disc must look like this and not say Update, Dropin or OEM:

Also note, you may need to boot the disc with the Startup Manager and use its built-in Disk Utility to reformat the drive HFS+. Mac OS X generally will not install on anything but HFS+ without some difficulty.
