Safari opens on secondary monitor

I have two 27" monitors and Safari insists on opening on the secondary monitor regardless of what I do. Anyone else experience this and were you able to resolve it?

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

User uploaded fileA couple things to check:

  • System Preferences, Display, Arrangement.
  • The screen with the white bar on top of it, is your primary display and apps are suppose to open on this screen
  • Is your primary display your 2nd monitor?
  • Gather Windows first
  • Then make any changes, it's hard to describe, but grab one or the other and move
  • Grab the white title bar area of the diagram and move to desired screen within the box
  • I have Mirror Displays off
  • Airplay display off
  • Show mirroring options... is checked
  • experiment, see it any of it helps!

Every time this happened to me, it was because I dragged a window or tab over there. I would at some point close Safari. Then when I opened it again, it would open on 2nd monitor.

What I did:

When Safari opens on the 'wrong' monitor, grab an open tab, and drag it to the other monitor, then let go. You should have Safari open on both monitors. You should also have a Safari Menu bar on both monitors. Go to the window on the monitor you do not want Safari to open with. Go Menu, File, Close Window (command +W). You should now have only one Safari window open on the monitor of your choice. Go Menu, Safari, Quit Safari. Then try reopening Safari. It should open on the screen of your choice.

I can't find a setting for default screen for Safari.

If it happens again, Make sure the last window you close is on the monitor of your choice.

Hope this helps! Let us know...

Thanks, your reasoning makes sense, but after taking the steps you outlined, the Safari app still opens on the wrong screen. Not so much a big deal but becomes progressively more annoying over time. Now it's infuriating. I generally have the two monitors set up so that I read on the left monitor, with other apps moved to the right monitor when necessary.
