Is buying a used mid-2011 iMac 27" ok?

I want to use the iMac for web development, surfing the web, graphic design and school study.

I have previously used a HP 15" 2GB RAM 400GB hard drive pc.

The specs:

Mid 2011

27" 2560 x 1440 display

Core i7 3.4 GHz processor

OS X El Capitan operating system

16GB RAM

Radeon 6970M 1024MB graphics

1TB hard drive.

Thanks.

There was an issue with early 2011 iMac that led to a recall of certain units. Certain MacBooks from 2011 -13 had the issue, so make sure you purchase from a reliable source, preferably with a warranty from Apple. An extended service plan may be advisable if your computer is going to get a lot of use.

If you're thinking of getting it through eBay or an acquaintance, I wouldn't advise it.

Don't buy anything that you can't test in person. If you do, make sure to

run Apple Hardware Test (Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support).

There is also an app called SMARTUtility (https://www.volitans-software.com/apps/smart-utility/)

which will give an in-depth condition of the hard drive. The free trial will allow a limited

number of uses which is all you need. This one is most important as it is difficult (read pricey)

to replace a HDD in an iMac. Load it on a USB stick and run it on the potential purchase.

If the seller balks on you doing these, run away as he(she) is likely trying to hide something.
