Rick's Escaping NJ

Q: Error in Log

I removed software downloaded from Apple that was particularly difficult.  In trying to be sure I have removed all traces, I see this in the System Log Queries:

Can someone tell me how to fix this?  One source suggested rebuilding the Launch Services Database.

I've gone throughout the Library (I thought) looking for vestiges of this program, but I may have missed something.

    App-Cleaner is a software that normally works well to remove software that was installed after it is installed.  The one exception is if the operating system is too new or too old for the application.    Are you sure you are using a current version of App-Cleaner that is known to be compatible with Yosemite?

    I would suggest contacting http://freemacsoft.net/appcleaner/ with your log and tell them what you were trying to remove.  They might be able to help you from here.

    I've been trying to remove many things.  I did have app-cleaner at one time.  I currently have El Capitan.

    I just went to the website you gave me.  At the bottom was a comment about Apple Certified Utilities.  I clicked it and it said it was going to install download MacKeeper in 10 seconds.  MacKeeper is well known to be a serious problem.

    I have gotten the the point where I trust nothing and no one.    Today I had an Adobe Flash dmg file appear on my desktop, which is very old.  I see thousands of error messages in console.  I've reinstalled El Capitan five times, including after erasing my disk and installing from a thumb drive.  I know that I know more than the average person.

    Backup has been taking days.  One person here says that the disk the Apple Store sold me doesn't really work with Time Machine.

    Is one paranoid if there really is malware surrounding us from all sides?

    The more I learn and study, the more confused I get.  And it's difficult to trust anyone, even those who provide information here.

    Yes, MacKeeper should be avoided at all costs:

    http://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3036

    You should regularly backup your data*:

    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html

    You should not be installing any system utility except to troubleshoot a backed up system, at the recommendation of someone who has ample years of experience isolating issues.

    Thanks Brody.  I try to do this.  But since the last install (done with the guidance of Apple Support), I've been unable to back up and new issues pop up.  Though I've been working with PC's since the (ahem), 1980's, I have enough knowledge to be dangerous.  I know it's not "If" your hard drive will fail, but "when."  I also understand that despite teams of people working to make computing safer at Apple and Microsoft and websites and Security Companies, and the government, that we will never truly be safe, and it is our responsibility to protect ourselves.

    <soapbox>

    I also believe that although crowd-sourcing may be very helpful in supporting the vast computing community, it is a way for companies to reduce costs and shirk their own responsibility for software and hardware that is defective or does not do what is expected.

    In any case, despite clean installs of the Op System and clean installs of software such as MS Office, Chrome and a few other "legitimate" programs, I continue to have errors.  The only way to not have these problems is to go back to paper, pencil and postage stamps.  Others have these problems and throw their hands in the air and give up.  I continue on with the idealistic view that a computer and software should operate as expected and safely.

    </soapbox>

    It's certainly frustrating to have problems only to be told what one should have done, especially when one has done that.  Even if I hadn't, it still doesn't help solve the problems.
