Q: Kernel Panic Black Screen Mid 2010 Mac Book Pro

Ever since I upgraded to Yosemite from Snow Leopard, I have been experiencing the black screen to white screen (Kernel panic?) that says I need to restart my computer.  Through my searching I discovered that this was a known issue after this model was released.  Unfortunately, I now hear that the time period of getting this fixed for free is now over.  Feel frustrated that I need to pay hundreds of dollars to get this fixed when it is the manufacturer's (Apple) fault?   I had Applecare, but it has of expired, so I am not covered for this.  Just to confirm that this is the problem, here is the report I received, when it happened recently.
