Upgrade from Pages 09 to Pages 5.6.1

Hi,

Merry Christmas.

I am running 10.10.5. If I upgrade to Pages 5.6.1 will I still be able to read documents written in Pages 09? Would it be better to upgrade to 10.11 first?

Many thanks

I would recommend the continued use of Pages '09 v4.3 over Pages v5.6.1 as the former has substantially more features, and does not have a habit of damaging, and/or inability to open documents that it just created.

Pages v5.6.1 requires OS X 10.10.4 or later. It does not require El Capitan 10.11 or later, so you can stay put on Yosemite if you wish. Pages v5.6.1 can now open Pages '06, '08, and '09 documents — but due to the superset of features that are in Pages '09, and omitted in Pages v5.6.1, you may find that opening older documents in Pages v5.6.1 will drop, or mangle unsupported functionality. If you allow Pages v5.6.1 to convert those opened earlier Pages documents, then they are no longer Pages '09 documents. Suggest you open copies of your originals.

Though the following is not an exhaustive list. You may miss the following functionality in Pages v5.6.1 due to Apple omissions:

  • No option to auto-capitalize sentences.
  • No linked text boxes
  • No facing pages, or alternate page header/footers
  • No Mail Merge
  • No Table to text, or Text to Table conversion
  • No intra-document bookmarks, or links to external Pages documents

Exported PDF loses hyperlinks in Table of Contents page numbers

  • and about 90 more missing features

With Pages '09 v4.3 installed, when you download Pages v5.6.1, it will quietly move the older Pages application into the Applications : iWork '09 folder. It will also attempt to migrate any custom Pages '09 templates that you have made into a different, hidden Pages v5.6.1 template location. Pages v5.6.1 introduces the ability to delete, or rename custom templates while in the Template chooser via a right-click menu.

Any Pages '09 symbol and text replacement mappings that you may have added into its Auto-Correction preferences are ignored by Pages v5.6.1, which now uses the current System Preferences : Keyboard panel : Text replacement entries.

With both versions of Pages installed, a double-click on a Pages document, regardless of its application origin, will always open it in Pages v5.6.1. Since Apple changed the internal document format, but not the icon appearance, discerning which version of Pages created the document is not visually possible, without some form of color tag use. If you forget, and Pages '09 is not quit — a double-click of a Pages v5.6.1 document will cause Pages '09 to open a dialog box indicating that you need a newer version of Pages, or that the index.xml file is missing. Just quit Pages '09, and double-click that document to open in Pages v5.6.1.

The Pages '09 User Guide is pretty much useless with Pages v5.6.1. The Help menu, and this community are the new user guide.
