ios 9.2 GPS Problems

iPhone 5s

ios 9.2

GPS tracking error

As soon as I upgraded to ios 9.2 last week I noticed that all of my Map Apps were having difficulties pointing to my exact GPS location, be it Waze, Google Maps or even the default Apple Maps. I cannot find a solution to this.

I cannot even seem to downgrade back to ios 9.1.

I use maps everyday! So I could a solution to this problem as soon as possible.

Thanks Apple Community.

So I've tried everything...restored device, installed the newer software 9.2.1 (13D20) you can only get th iTunes, etc etc.

I am still having the GPS issue.

Here is a little trick that I just started doing today that has worked both times my GPS signal went out. When I was using Waze this morning and the "No GPS" popped up...I simply turned the phone over and knocked lightly on the back of the iPhone a few times (like you are knocking on a door) and just like that the "No GPS" went away and Waze located me immediately. The GPS worked just like it suppose to.

Later on mid-morning the same thing happened..."No GPS". So I did the same thing...turned the iPhone over and knocked a few times on the back of the phone and GPS immediately started working!

Ultimately, I have only tried this twice but it has worked better than anything else (i.e. Turning phone on/off, shutting down apps, hard reset, etc).

Could have just been luck those couple of times but I will continue to do this and hopefully it keeps fixing the issue until I can get a new phone

Reply back if anybody has any success!

I have an iPhone 6 w/iOS 10.3.1 - out of warranty

All of a sudden 2 weeks ago my GPS accuracy was way off and my WiFi reception was weak - I was using iOS 9 (last version) at the time. I couldn't use any GPS apps. Of course I needed Google maps for out of town directions when everything went wacko. My initial research found all the GPS/Wifi/Network software reset "solutions". Nothing worked. Then I came upon this blog. I went to a local phone/computer repair shop which had excellent reviews - it is a local franchise of a national chain. They pretty much charge $79 for all fixes involving replacement parts so I expected that after hearing my story, they would replace the GPS signal flex cable for $79 and my problem would be resolved. I was quite surprised when I was told that trying a hardware fix would be a waste of my $$$. They insisted it was a software issue with Apple and to try backing up with iTunes and restoring my phone which would also upgrade to iOS to 10.3.1. As a back up, I was told if the restore didn't work, go to the Apple store and see what they would give me on a trade-in for a new iPhone 7. Well the back-up/restore/iOS upgrade didn't work and I don't give up that easy.

I found the flex cable replacement instructions on fixit.com and proceeded to Amazon. I picked up the GPS flex cable and a GPS signal antenna on Amazon for $4.95 each. I replaced the antenna too because it was cheap enough and you have to remove the antenna to get to the flex cable. I bought tools and a magnetic project mat for ~$40 (I go high end - you can get a set of tools and project mat for ~$25). What I noticed was the underside of the new flex cable had gritty substance on the metal strip while the old part was smooth. The procedure was tedious and took me 3+ hours to complete this morning. I was scared that when finished I wouldn't even be able to power up my iPhone. It powered up fine. My GPS and Wi-Fi are now working PERFECTLY.

It's a hardware issue!

If I had to do it over again, I would have insisted the shop replace the flex cable for $79.

Hi, I have same problems with GPS on iPad mini and Macbook Air. After update to iOS 9.2 and OS X 10.11.2 GPS service stop working. If I try find my location on Apple maps app said "Your location can not be found". On iPad same problem, only iPhone 5s works. If I try find my phone I don`t see actual location of mac and iPad, only iPhone. Weather app not work too...where is the problem? I try restarts services, hard restart and nothing changed...

I'm having the same problem with iOS 9.2 (13C75) on AT&T network with my iPhone 6S+.

Apple gave me a brand new phone last night with iOS 9.1 installed and right out of the box (unmodified) the native apple map app had the same GPS issue.

I upgraded to 9.2 and then did a fresh install of everything, yet the issue persists.

Apple needs to address this asap as it makes the phone pretty useless for me.

Same problem here - I have researched this issue and it seem to have started happening a lot for iphone users after the 8.2 update - it's surprising that Apple haven't addressed this - I can't find any official support response which is surprising when you consider how vital the GPS function is and how many people have reported a problem.

It's not just a 9.2 error and so I can only imagine that it's something Apple are aware of - but not entirely sure how to fix.

If you are reading this and you have the same issue - I suggest you post your complaints online and keep doing it until someone in the media picks up the story or someone at Apple pulls their finger out... an issue like this could seriously dent sales if enough people report the issue eventually buyers will think twice. After all - who wants a phone that cant use GPS in 2016?? NO-ONE-AT-ALL.

Come on Apple ... sort it out!

PS - please don;t try to fob me off with the lame "reset your network settings etc... restart your phone... toggle your location services ... etc " it doesn't work and I'm getting sick of explaining it.

You have two or more different issues going on.

First, your Macbook Air does NOT have a GPS receiver in it and therefore has limited ability to determine an accurate location. It can use various techniques to try to determine location based on Internet hops and WiFi networks but these will never be precise and should not be expected to be.

Secondly, the error "Your location can not be found" on your iPad almost certainly means that a required service setting somewhere in "Settings" > "Location Services" is disabled and is not allowing access to the GPS to determine you location. Also please recognize that GPS locations require that your iPad have line of sight to satellites in the sky. Therefore, if you are in a building or even have a poorly designed case on your iPad, it can completely prevent proper GPS use.

There are two likely issues to consider:

1) Look very carefully and thoroughly at every setting within Settings > Privacy > Location Services. Make sure that you not only have Location Services enabled, but also try toggling off and then back to "While Using" or "Always" for every App you wish to allow location access (i.e. Maps, Google Maps, Waze).

2) If that does not solve it, then take your device to an Apple store so they can test your hardware. It's completely possible that the iOS upgrade was completely unrelated to a GPS radio failure in your device. When a hardware failure occurs around the same time as an upgrade on any kind it makes diagnosis very difficult to diagnose.

Thanks for the effort.

Not sure why you are referring to Mac Air the original post is clearly re. iphone 5 9.2.

When you reset network and privacy settings and toggle location services - all of the location sevices automatically are enabled (they did on my phone anyway). If you read the thread you will see most people have tried this. For some it works - but for most people (like me) it does not.

I took the phone to a dealer - he was unable to test the hardware and just repeated the same old garb about settings. I haven't got good access to Apple authorised service provider because I live in Jakarta. Finding the only 2 listed on google maps (no irony intended) in the entire city which is very tricky to navigate without effective GPS (Jakarta is one of the worst gongested cities in the world) - is a challenge in itself!

Plus they are rarely staffed with appropriate level experts. So it is really my last resort.

You should do a bit of research you will find many cases where reverting to older os version worked - so I'm skeptical that it is hardware issue.

But thanks anyway.

99.999% sure I've solved my issue.

The phone was too close to the head unit in my 2012 ML350.

Held my iPhone by the window in the ML, no issues.

Put my wife's iPhone in the phone cradle by the head unit... her's did not work but mine did while holding it away from the head unit.

Did a 30 minute test drive and was able to 100% reproduce the error situation and correct it.

Repositioned the phone cradle and everything appears to be working fine.

Also tested the iPhone in my F150 and the GPS never failed.

I took my Iphone to the Apple Store the other day. They flashed my phone and reinstalled ios 9.2 to see if it was a software issue. That didn't work.

Apparently, if GPS failure was a hardware issue, they cannot fix it. Since I bought AppleCare and my phone was still under warranty, they swapped me a new phone. The whole process only took 20 minutes.

I still think this was a software issue (given the problem immediately occurred after I updated to ios 9.2 and other people are having similar issues - maybe this issue only hits a certain batch of Iphones). Apple Store swapped my phone rather than investigating further was more for convenience (to me and to Apple) which worked out perfectly so I'm not complaining.
